How to Create White-Background Product Photos with AI (No Studio)
You do not need a studio to produce a clean white-background product photo. A phone, a cutout tool, and a compliance pass get most sellers there. This guide walks the workflow we use and recommend.
What you need
- A phone with decent lighting (daylight is free and best).
- A cutout tool — Photoroom or Remove.bg.
- A compliance checker — our free tool.
Step 1: Shoot the product
Photograph on a contrasting background (not white — you want the cutout tool to separate the subject cleanly). Even light, no harsh shadows on the product itself. Keep the full product in frame with margin.
Step 2: Cut out the background
Run the photo through a cutout tool. For a few images, the app UI is fine; for a catalog, use an API or batch mode. Export a transparent PNG.
Step 3: Composite on white
Place the cutout on a pure white (255,255,255) background. Most cutout tools do this in one click; otherwise composite in any editor.
Step 4: Fix the edges
Transparent, reflective, or glossy products need a human eye. Zoom in: check the subject outline, any halos, and reflections. This is the step automated tools still miss — our benchmark isolates it as a standalone weak point.
Step 5: Compliance check
Before publishing, screen the file: white background, product ~85% fill, resolution ≥ 1600px longest side, no text on the main image. Our checker flags these without uploading your image anywhere.
Step 6: Export per channel
- Amazon main: pure white, no text, real product.
- Shopify PDP: white plus a few lifestyle variants.
- Ads: square/story formats with on-brand backgrounds.
Common mistakes
- Shooting on white (the cutout tool has nothing to separate).
- Skipping the edge check on glass or metal.
- Publishing without a fill/resolution check.
FAQ
Is an AI white-background image compliant? The white background is the start, not the guarantee. Fill, resolution, and content rules are still on you — hence the compliance check.
Which tool is cheapest? Free tiers exist for both Photoroom and Remove.bg; paid plans start around $9–10/mo. Model your volume first.
